  3. <hi style=afpcap>The Air Force borrowed seven Lockheed P2V-5U Neptunes from the Navy in 1954 gaining the designation RB-69A for clandestine reconnaissance operations.  The aircraft were fitted with a large sideways looking airborne radar on the starboard side, and were operated from Wiesbaden Air Base, Germany for a period in the mid/late '50s, almost certainly conducting patrols along the border with east Germany. The aircraft were black overall with US Air Force titles, but no unit insignia. At the completion of their duties they were returned to the Navy.</hi>
